At its 11th Annual Roundtable held in Accra, Ghana, AFTRA unanimously endorsed Namibia as the host of the 2023 Conference and Roundtable.

Therefore, the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture of Namibia and Namibian National Teachers’ Union (NANTU), both members of AFTRA, will work collaboratively to host the events.

Considering that Ministry and NANTU also hosted the AFTRA 4th Conference and 6th Roundtable in 2015, Namibia now joins the rank of the unique countries to host the events twice since AFTRA’s inauguration in 2010.

This demonstrates the frontline position of Namibia in the advancement of AFTRA and the teaching profession in Africa.

ABOUT AFTRA

AFTRA is an intergovernmental organisation comprising the Ministries of Education and National Agencies regulating teaching in all the Member States of the African Union.

Inaugurated on October 12, 2010, in Abuja Nigeria by the Ministers of Education of Nigeria and South Africa, AFTRA has grown into a profound continental Federation that leads policy development and implementation for the professionalization of teaching in Africa.

AFTRA is also a member of the International Forum of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (www.iftra.org) and the UN International Taskforce on Teachers for Education 2030 (www.teachersforefa.unesco.org/).

In pursuit of its mandates, AFTRA further functions as the African Union Co-Chair of the CESA Teacher Development Cluster; a member of the CESA Curriculum Cluster; and a member of the Advisory Group of the African Continental Qualification Framework (ACQF). AFTRA has UNESCO-IICBA and Education International Africa Regional Office as strategic partners and collaborates with UNESCO Regional offices across Africa and other continents.

The national laws that established the National Agencies which regulate teaching empower them to register and license teachers, set standards for pre-service and ongoing teacher professional development, develop and implement a code of ethics and professional standards for teachers and school leaders, and work generally to promote the professional status of teachers.

AFTRA, therefore, is working to translate these mandates into continental frameworks, to facilitate the exchange of best practices, teacher mobility, and quality teaching and learning throughout Africa for the actualization of SDG4- Education, CESA 16-25 and the AU Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.

AFTRA Founding Countries
