Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, meets with the Conference of Heads of Government-Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) to discuss challenges in education, including security concerns, inadequate staff, and the double-track system.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, held his first meeting with members of the Conference of Heads of Government-Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) at Sunyani Technical University. The session focused on addressing key challenges facing senior high schools in Ghana and promoting collaborative solutions for improving the educational system.

In his address, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of strengthening school inspections to ensure that prohibited items such as dangerous weapons and drugs do not find their way into schools. He underscored the need for tighter security protocols to maintain a safe learning environment for students and staff alike.

The minister also proposed several strategies to address the ongoing issues affecting education delivery, including the shortage of non-teaching staff, challenges related to the double-track system, and the unresolved financial obligations inherited from previous governments. He reiterated the government’s commitment to treating education-related issues as national emergencies and called for the support of all stakeholders to work together in improving the quality of education in Ghana.

During the meeting, he was introduced as the new Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), alongside his deputies, Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi and Dr. Manawaru Issahaque. This leadership transition aims to bring renewed focus and innovation to the management of education in Ghana.

CHASS members voiced concerns regarding the lack of adequate resources, the influence of external factors on education, and the unfair sanctions sometimes imposed on schools. In response, the GES management assured the heads of schools that their concerns would be taken seriously and that a fair hearing process would be upheld.

The meeting marked a critical step in fostering collaboration between the Ministry of Education, GES, and senior high schools, with the ultimate goal of finding lasting solutions to the ongoing challenges and ensuring that all students receive quality education.

The move will not only alleviate the financial pressures faced by trainees but also promote their academic success and professional development. As the government continues to roll out these and other initiatives, Ghana’s future looks bright, with a commitment to the well-being of its citizens at the core of all policies.
