Ferdinand | EducationGhana | October 21 | Minister Approves Inclusion of Ghana School of Law Students in Students Loan Trust Fund Plus (SLTF+)
The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has approved the inclusion of Ghana School of Law students in the Students Loan Trust Fund Plus (SLTF+) scheme, ensuring greater access to financial support for legal education in Ghana. The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) has announced the official approval by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, for the inclusion of Ghana School of Law students in the Students Loan Trust Fund Plus (SLTF+) scheme. This development represents a landmark policy breakthrough in Ghana’s higher education financing, extending the government’s student loan facility to cover professional law students for the first time.
A Step Toward Inclusive Legal Education
According to the GSL SRC, the approval marks “a significant step toward making legal education more inclusive, accessible, and financially sustainable for all law students in Ghana.”For years, students of the Ghana School of Law have been excluded from the Students Loan Trust Fund’s coverage due to the institution’s professional, rather than academic, status. The new inclusion under the SLTF+ initiative corrects this long-standing limitation. Background: The SLTF+ Policy Framework
The Students Loan Trust Fund Plus (SLTF+), launched under the Ministry of Education earlier this year, seeks to expand financial support to include professional institutions, teacher trainees, and technical university students.By incorporating law students, the Ministry underscores its commitment to ensuring that no eligible Ghanaian student is denied access to education because of financial constraints. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader Education for All policy, focusing on equity, affordability, and the strategic development of skilled professionals in priority sectors, including law, medicine, and education.SRC Commends the Minister’s Leadership
In a statement issued by the Ghana School of Law SRC, the Council expressed profound gratitude to Hon. Haruna Iddrisu for his decisive intervention and continued commitment to student welfare.“This approval is not just a financial relief but a recognition of the vital role of law students in advancing justice and governance in Ghana,” the SRC noted. The Council also acknowledged the Students Loan Trust Fund Secretariat for its collaboration and pledged to support the smooth rollout of the scheme among eligible students.Implementation and Next Steps
The inclusion of GSL students under the SLTF+ is expected to take effect in the 2025/2026 academic year. Eligible students will be able to apply through the SLTF+ digital portal, which now includes professional programmes approved by the Ministry of Education. The SLTF has indicated that application guidelines, repayment options, and eligibility verification processes will be communicated through its official website: https://www.sltf.gov.ghHOT NEWS :
