The Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the in Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region,  Mr. Sheik Mohammed Dauda has disclosed that some landlords at New Longoro, a community are ejecting teachers from their homes and giving out their rooms to persons engaged in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.

Sheik Mohammed Dauda made the disclosure on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at the GES office in Kintampo when a group called the Degbwe Development Association visited and presented some dual desks to the office to distribute to some selected schools in the Municipality.

Sheik Dauda, after acknowledging the kind gesture of the group, disclosed the heartbreaking news to the audience and added that there is a high teacher attrition rate in the Kintampo North Municipality, a situation he partly attributes to lack of accommodation for teachers posted to teach in certain communities in the district.

He described the situation as worrying and appealed to stakeholders to intervene in resolving it.

The GES official further indicated that his outfit intends to use a community information center based in the New Longoro community to sensitize the people there, especially, landlords on the need to accommodate teachers to enable them to provide their services diligently.

“I think all along I was looking for an opportunity such as this to share this observation and experience with colleagues and more especially, an association such as this. We have a very big problem at hand and that has to do with the teacher attrition rate in the Mo area. Just last Sunday, I was at New Longoro.

We attended a teacher’s funeral and as soon as I dropped out of the car, my teachers came around. Then I welcome them and we shared pleasantries…and I asked them are you okay? They said yes. And I asked them, have you received some new teachers? they said yes. So is that okay? they said no, they don’t have accommodation. And because of that, some have gone back to prepare and come. You will be surprised to hear those teachers in New Longoro are being thrown out of their rooms and they give the rooms to galamsayers.

Time didn’t allow me, I intended to go to the local information center to actually plead with the people to accommodate teachers and desist from ejecting teachers from their rooms and giving them to galamsayers because galamsey is a temporal thing but the teaching activity is something that is permanent and it is something that will bring out your children to be productive citizens in future and to help the community first before they extend it to other parts of the world.

So I’m pleading with you as an association, as you go along, add it to your activities to Educate the people” he said.
