JUST IN: UCC’s Baaba Takyi-Mensah wins COVID-19 Writing Challenge

The long-awaited results of the COVID 19 Writing Challenge is out. Studentshubgh and Sedesel Publications the organizers of the challenge have this week released the top stories selected from this competition that was designed to help students creatively share their experience from the COVID 19 Challenge.

Baaba Takyi-Mensah, a resident of Tema and UCC student emerged as the overall winner with her story, The Second Fall of a Man. Another lady, Philomena Agudu writer of Frontline Fiasco bagged the 2nd place position with 3rd prize going to Davis Fiifi Dey, a student of Koforidua Senior high Technical School.

Baaba walks away with a Laptop, a book Package, and her short story published in the final collection while Philomena Agudu also walks away with a Tablet, book Package, and her story published in a collection. Davis also receives a set of books and will have his story published in the collection.

The awarding of prizes will take place on Wednesday 17th June at Radio Univers in Accra.

Other writers in the Top 10 and will have their stories published in the final collection are Stanley Asasu, Linda Mensah, Elliot John Gyedu, Stephanie Taamea Boadu, Samuel Atule, Agorinya Reveille, and Awo Aba Oduah Gyan.

Background

Studentshubgh, a youth mentoring organization in partnership with Sedesel Publications launched the COVID’19 Writing Challenge in Ghana on 30th March 2020 with the aim of engaging students between the ages of 17 to 25yrs to make good use of their time while at home for lockdown.

Participants were challenged to come up with a creative story on the theme ISOLATION or SOCIAL DISTANCING amid COVID-19.

The deadline stipulated was 31st May 2020.

Participants were encouraged to write their creative story, not more than 2000 words, emphasizing the theme given them.

The competition which was highly patronized received atotal of 283 stories from 13 regions nationwide. All stories received were worth reading but the

organizers had to come up with the Top three (3).

For transparency and fairness, the organizers reached out to 16 Judges to review and select the top stories based on; Creativity, Relevance to the theme, Originality and Quality of content.

The competition had 2 rounds. The top 25 were selected in the first round and out of these, the top 10 and final 3 were selected based on the averages of the judges.

The success of the Challenge has motivated the team to make it a regular competition and open it up for partnerships. Interested partners should get in touch at admin@studentshubgh.com
