The National Teaching Council (NTC) has begun the distribution of Licenses to Pre-Tertiary Teachers and other administrative staff of the Ghana Education Service.
According to reports gathered by EducationGhana’s Ellis Ferdinand, some district education directorates are being issued the licenses to be distributed to their teachers and administrative staff.
Speaking to Elis Ferdinand, some teachers of the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, who received their licenses spoke extensively about the licenses, describing it as a product worth having.
About the License
The National Teaching Council (NTC) earlier, opened registration for In-service teachers employed in the public or private sector. The purpose of this registration is to introduce every teacher currently in active service to the NTC Teacher Portal Ghana(TPG)which will serve as the online hub for all continuous professional development activities and licensing.

The registration will also provide NTC with an updated database of all teachers in the country.
The NTC in a letter dated April 2, 2020, and signed by its Acting Executive Secretary, Christian Addai -Poku, to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, indicated that teachers should be encouraged to participate in the process even as they are on break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Every teacher across the country was advised to use the lockdown period to familiarize himself or herself with the NTCTPG web portal.
Payment
The National Teaching Council (NTC) has said that In-Service Teachers will pay an amount of GHC 200 to secure an initial license and GHC 100 for renewal in every two years. Teacher Professional License once issued is valid for 2 years.
The National Teaching Council (NTC) made this revelation at a sensitization program for In-Service teachers on teacher professionalism at St. Mary’s Senior High School on Wednesday 23rd of October, 2019.

The NTC further indicated that It is an offense to recruit a teacher who has no license or keep in a school, a teacher whose license has expired or for a person to practice as a teacher when not in good standing.
Teacher Unions in a statement issued on June 7, indicated the Ghc100 was agreed at a stakeholders’ meeting with the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the National Teaching Council.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Finance, Education, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission as well as the Pre-Tertiary Education Teacher Unions held an earlier meeting to agree on a Professional Development Allowance for Teachers.
The Unions added, that the meeting concluded on a Ghc1200 Professional Development Allowance for Professional Teachers and Ghc600 for Non-Professional Teachers.

The subsequent meeting with the National Teaching Council (NTC) agreed on a Ghc100 license fee for teachers which should be deducted at source from the annual Professional Development Allowances.
