JUST IN: NaCCA warns schools using Unapproved textbooks; names unapproved books on the market

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has issued an official warning to pre-tertiary schools, both private and public to desist from using textbooks that have not been approved by the council.

NaCCA in a statement issued on March 6, 2021 and signed by its Acting Director-General, John Menah Anang, said, that it has noticed some private and public pre-tertiary schools were using unapproved books.

Publishing Companies

According to NaCCA, some individuals and publishing companies are advertising unapproved books across the country.

The council mention Golden History of Ghana for Basic 6 , published by Golden Publications and authored by Mercy Gyaa-Adiyiah as one of the many unapproved books on the market.

 

Heads of Schools

NaCCA cautioned heads of schools and the general public to desist from using or buying unapproved books, saying it was an illegal activity to buy, sell or use unapproved books.

Inspection

In addition, the council said it shall visit pre-tertiary schools randomly to inspect the kind of books they use, adding, that schools with unapproved books shall be brought to book.

The council added, that drastic measures shall be taken against publishers of such books.

Legal Authority

NaCCA further indicated, that it was the only mandatory institution by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023) to approve all teaching and learning materials for use in pre-tertiary schools in Ghana.

The council said their regulation include the approval of textbooks, supplementary materials, E-materials or digital content  as well as Non-text materials  such as manipulatives , puzzles, games etc.
