The Scholarship Secretariat has fulfilled the pledge by Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, that government will take care of the educational needs of the children of the teacher who was killed at Abuakwa and has offered a scholarship to the deceased’s daughter to undertake a four-year nursing training programme in the United Kingdom.

Promise redeemed

Ms Charlotte Duako Somuah, the daughter of Mr George Bosompem Somuah, the 57-year-old tutor of Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, who was brutally beaten to death over snails in 2019, has gained admission to Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in Scotland.

Presenting the scholarship to Ms Somuah, the Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Mr Kingsley Agyemang, said, “the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh and per the instructions of the Vice-President, we have awarded a scholarship to take care of the tuition and maintenance of the daughter of the late Mr Somuah of Asiakwa. It will cover everything including air passage from Accra to Scotland and back after her studies”.

Death

Police initial investigations showed that the late Mr Somuah incurred the wrath of six teenagers, aged between 18 and 19 after he threatened to report them to the police for stealing his farm produce, among other things.

Support

Mr Agyemang explained that after the demise of Mr Somuah, the government promised to take care of the educational needs of the children, currently two of them, under the age of 18, are benefiting from the free senior high school education and free basic education.

He explained that the support to Ms Somuah was also based on the promise and the need to increase access to quality education as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goal Four (SDG4), and stated that the government was committed to ensuring that all Ghanaian children received a good quality education.

He urged the beneficiary, who would commence her studies in October 2020, to concentrate on the course and come out with flying colours so that she would be able to help Ghanaians seeking health care and also support her family.

Appreciation
