JUST IN: GRASAG-UEW Elects Female President

The Electoral Commission,GRASAG UEW has organized this year’s election in order to give room to new executives for the 2019/2020 academic year.

Election which is said to be the political barometer for measuring the acceptance and non acceptance of a candidate came off on Thursday, 23rd May, 2019 in both Winneba and Ajumako Campuses.

As expected and done in all major elections in Ghana, polls are to open at exactly 7am and close at 5pm.

However, this year’s election was almost marred as a result of low power current which delayed the process.

Electoral Commissioner had swiftly deployed generators at all polling stations in order to pave way for the process.Eventually, power was finally restored at around 30minutes past 10am for voting to begin.

The presidency was heavily contested by three candidates; Mr. Edem Cudjoe Cephas, a first year MPhil Communications and Media studies student, Mr Alfred Antwi-Agyei, a first year MPhil English Language student and Ms. Heartwill Selasi Tameklo, a first year MPhil Home Economics student.

At the end of polls, while the electorates wait with baited breath, the Electoral Commissioner, Hon. Mr. Anthony Agamboka Atandigre declared the only lady contender, Ms. Heartwill Tameklo as President Elect.

She, out of 371 valid votes cast polled 212 votes representing 57.14% to beat her Male counterparts, Mr. Alfred Antwi-Agyei who polled 104 votes representing 28.03% and Mr. Edem Cephas Cudjoe who polled 55 votes representing 14.82% respectively.

Other executives elected on the day are Mr. Robert Atsu Okor, who out of 363 valid votes cast had 294 votes representing (80.99%) to emerge as Organizer elect.

Ms. Bernice Pinto as General Secretary elect polled 209 votes (56%) out of 369 votes cast. Ms. Linda Apambila Assibi as Treasurer elect, polled 237 votes(66.20%) out of 358 votes cast. Mr. Gilbert Addo (Financial Secretary) and Mrs Joseline Authur (Gender Commissioner) respectively went into the contest unopposed.

The President elect, Ms. Heartwill Tamaklo in her appreciation message opined ” I am blessed as I step into a new era of leadership. I wish to assure GRASAG-UEW that my leadership will reflect utmost compassion, humility, integrity and the general wellbeing of members”

Meanwhile, subject to article 47 and 49 of GRASAG-UEW’s Constitution, assumption of office of Elected Executives and Handing Over shall be done in August after the elections of executives for Sandwich Students in July unless otherwise decided by Senate.
