Learn the full steps to apply for STEM-focused Senior High Schools in Ghana, including GES placement, program selection, eligibility, and tips to boost your chances in 2025.

 What Is a STEM SHS?

A STEM SHS is a government-accredited Senior High School that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, integrating hands-on learning, modern ICT tools, robotics, AI, and coding into Ghana’s reformed high school curriculum.

Ghana’s Ministry of Education, through the Ghana Education Service (GES) and partners like T-TEL and CAMFED, has introduced these schools to train the next generation of scientists, engineers, digital innovators, and problem-solvers.

✅ Who Is Eligible to Join a STEM SHS?

  • JHS 3 students sitting the BECE in 2025
  • Must select Science, Technical, or ICT-related programmes during SHS selection
  • Should demonstrate interest in STEM through subjects like Maths, Science, ICT
  • Bonus: Prior participation in coding bootcamps, science fairs, or Girls-in-ICT events helps during placement to STEM-focused schools

📝 Step-by-Step Process to Join a STEM SHS in Ghana

1. Register for BECE

Make sure you are duly registered and writing the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

2. Understand the School Placement System

The Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) handles all SHS placements. Candidates must select schools using the updated 2025 School Selection Guidelines released by GES.

3. Select a STEM-Focused SHS During BECE Registration

When choosing your schools, indicate STEM programs (like General Science, Engineering Science, or ICT electives). Choose from the list of STEM-empowered SHSs like:

  • Presbyterian Boys’ SHS (PRESEC), Legon
  • Accra Academy, Accra
  • Aburi Girls SHS
  • Opoku Ware School
  • Tamale SHS
  • Wesley Girls SHS
  • St. Louis SHS
  • Ghana SHS, Koforidua
  • Achimota School
  • Tema SHS

👉 Tip: Prioritize Category A or B STEM schools to increase your chances of a quality STEM education.

4. Participate in the STEM Screening or Aptitude Test (If Applicable)

Some STEM Model Schools (e.g. Bosomtwe STEM Academy, Accra STEM Academy) may organize STEM Aptitude Tests or require evidence of academic performance for placement.

5. Await Placement Results

When GES releases placement results (usually 6–8 weeks after BECE), you’ll be placed based on:

  • Aggregate score
  • Program selection (e.g. General Science, Technical)
  • Residential status (boarding/day)
  • Gender-based balance (in mixed schools)

6. Accept Offer and Report to School

If placed in a STEM school:

  • Print your admission letter
  • Follow the reporting guidelines (dates, prospectus, fees—if applicable under boarding)
  • Engage in STEM orientation activities during your first week

💡 Bonus: Improve Your STEM Profile Before SHS

  • Join Girls-in-ICT, Science Clubs, or Coding Bootcamps
  • Build projects (basic apps, science kits, robotics) and document them
  • Follow educational content on platforms like TeCHAiDE, KACE, or NSMQ Ghana

🎓 Why Choose a STEM SHS?

  • High transition rate to Engineering, Computer Science & Medicine programs in universities
  • Access to digital learning labs and exchange programmes
  • Competitive edge for international STEM scholarships
