THE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT UNIT

The Student Engagement Unit shall be a unit at St. Louis College of Education
that is headed by the Dean of Student Affairs.

The Dean of Students Affairs shall be responsible for planning, coordinating
and implementing a variety of programs and services which are designed to
assist and support students in achieving their academic and personal success.

The Dean of Students is to provide rapid response system that addresses
students’ grievances.

The Dean of Students shall strive to provide equal opportunity, service and
access to all categories of students regardless of age, disability, gender, race,
religion and ethnicity.

The Dean of Students shall offer services to students to enable them to engage in critical inquiry and life-long learning meant to enhance confidence for contributing to personal and community development.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

There shall be a Student Representative Council of St. Louis College of Education (hereinafter referred to as SRC). The composition aims and objectives of the Student Representative Council shall be as prescribed in the SRC constitution.

The functions of the Student Representative Council shall be as prescribed by Statute 38 of the Harmonized Statutes for Colleges of Education.

The constitution of the SRC shall be accepted by the general assembly of the SRC and sent through the Dean of Students to the Academic Board for consideration and approval.
Election of SRC officers

There shall be general elections for the officers of SRC in the second semester
of each academic year. Any student elected shall hold office for a term of one
academic year.

The mode and conditions for standing for elections shall be prescribed by the Dean of Students, subject to the approval of the Academic Board.

The election shall be supervised by the Dean of Students.

Electoral Commission

There shall be an independent electoral commission appointed by AcademicBoard. The electoral commission shall comprise two senior members, one of whom shall chair the commission, two students representing each hall of residence, and a representative of the College secretary who shall be the secretary.

The electoral commission shall perform the following functions:

• Fix a date for elections
• Provide and circulate information on vetting and election rules to the student
body to guide the election procedures and processes in the College.
• Conduct and supervise elections and related activities.
• Vet candidates who have filed their nomination forms to contest elections.

• Declare any candidate eligible or disqualified to contest in an election on
justifiable grounds.
• Determine pre-election petitions and grievances.
• Declare results in consultation with the office of the Dean of Students.

• Determine post-election petitions and grievances.
• Perform other functions that may be assigned from time to time by the
Dean of Students.

Supporting Procedures

It is the responsibility of all staff (both academic and non-academic) and management involved in the delivery of teaching, learning, assessment, and support to St. Louis College of Education students to foster and promote student engagement opportunities across the College.

The Student Affairs and Quality Assurance officers are responsible for ensuring that all students are aware of and able to access student engagement opportunities.

The communication strands include SRC Representatives, the Students
Handbook and Class Representatives.
