Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is determined to tackle staffing issues at UEW and other universities in Ghana by improving recruitment processes and ensuring timely financial approvals.

Education Minister Commits to Solutions for UEW’s Staffing Issues

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is currently grappling with significant staffing shortages that are hindering both teaching and administrative functions.

In a meeting with UEW’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, on February 24, 2025, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu recognized these issues and promised immediate action.

Recruitment Delays Impacting Education Quality

The Minister acknowledged that delays in financial approvals from the government have hindered UEW and other universities from filling positions left by retiring and departing faculty.

“We understand how staffing shortages affect both teaching and learning. I am collaborating closely with the Finance Ministry to ensure that lecturers and administrative staff are recruited in a timely manner,” he stated.

Impacts of Staffing Shortages at UEW

  • Increased workload for current faculty members
  • Deteriorating student-to-lecturer ratio, impacting academic standards
  • Slower research advancements due to insufficient faculty support

Hon. Iddrisu stressed that the Ministry is dedicated to refining recruitment processes and ensuring ongoing hiring to maintain high-quality education in Ghana’s universities.
