On June 7, 2024, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah, joined Her Excellency Hajia Samira Bawumia at Labone Senior High School to commemorate Green Ghana Day. This significant event underscored the importance of environmental stewardship and climate education.
Address by Dr. Eric Nkansah
In his speech, Dr. Nkansah highlighted the pivotal role of education in combating climate change. He stressed that effective climate action hinges on education, training, and public awareness. By integrating climate change topics into the educational system, GES aims to foster a generation that is knowledgeable and proactive about environmental issues.
Curriculum Integration
GES, in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other stakeholders, has woven climate change and green economy topics into the school curricula, starting from the basic level. The new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, currently being piloted in 33 schools nationwide, also includes comprehensive content on climate change and green economy.
Launch of Africa Student for Climate Action (ASCA)
To further engage students in climate action, the Africa Student for Climate Action (ASCA) initiative was launched. This program aims to empower the youth to lead environmental initiatives and promote sustainable practices among their peers. The initiative is expected to harness the enthusiasm and creativity of students to drive meaningful change.
Tree Planting Ceremony
As part of the Green Ghana Day celebrations, Dr. Nkansah, Her Excellency Hajia Samira Bawumia, and other dignitaries, alongside students, participated in a tree planting ceremony. This symbolic act was a commitment to enhancing the green cover and promoting a culture of tree planting and conservation among the youth.
