EducationGhana| May 13|Government releases GH¢200 million for Free SHS:
The government of Ghana has released GH¢200 million for the smooth running of its flagship programme, the free senior high school.
Among the challenges confronting the free senior high school programme currently such as shortage of food supply and lack¢ of accommodation facility that has led to students sleeping on the floor and congestion in classrooms, the government has released the aforementioned amount to address the current challenges.
According to management, part of this amount will go to the National Food Buffer Stock (NAFCO) for the purchasing of food items, while some will go to the heads of SHSs to cater for perishable.
Again the remaining amount covers part of last year’s arrears and other expenses such as uniforms, feeding for the boarding students and one hot meal for day students.
The Free Senior High School (Free SHS) education policy in Ghana was a government initiative introduced in the 2017 September presidential administration of Nana Akufo-Addo.
The policy’s origination began as part of the President’s presidential campaign during Ghana’s 2016 election period and has become an essential part of Ghana’s educational system.
