Government gives Teacher Trainees 'Allowance Haircut' for GHC149

Ferdinand | EducationGhana |July 25| Government provides an Allowance Trim of GH¢149 to Teacher Trainees

The Teacher Trainee Association of Ghana (TTAG)’s National Executive Council (NEC) announced on July 24, 2023, a decrease in the monthly stipend given to trainees.

Starting this academic year, eligible trainees will now receive GH¢149.00 monthly, which is a reduction from the previous amount of GH¢204.00. This adjustment was made in response to a request from the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) to the Ministry of Education (MoE) to assist with trainees’ meal expenses.

Despite the reduction, the NEC remains fully committed to advocating for trainees’ well-being and working towards the most favourable outcomes for their benefit. The reduced stipend will offer some financial relief to trainees during their training for a period of three months.

The NEC expressed its appreciation to all Teacher Trainees for their patience, dedication, and support throughout the endeavour to reinstate the stipends.

A confirmation has now been received that the allowances will be disbursed this week, providing much-needed relief to eligible Teacher Trainees.

Under this arrangement, eligible trainees will receive the stipend for three (3) months, alleviating the financial burden they have faced during their training.

The NEC conveyed its gratitude to all Teacher Trainees for their unwavering support, patience, and commitment throughout the battle for the reinstatement of the allowances.

Previously, eligible Teacher Trainees were entitled to GH¢400.00 per month for each semester of the academic year. The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) received and disbursed GH¢204.00.

Out of the GH¢204.00, GH¢200.00 was directly paid to the students’ e-account for withdrawal. The remaining GH¢4.00 was collected by TTAG as membership dues. The Principals of the various Colleges of Education (CoE) received GH¢196.00 to cover the students’ feeding and other expenses on their behalf.

However, there has been a slight adjustment to the allowance amount. The NEC has been informed that the trainees’ stipend has been modified from GH¢204.00 to GH¢149.00. This decision was made following a request from PRINCOF to the MoE during the previous academic year.

TTAG Clarifies the Reason behind Teacher Trainees’ Allowance Reduction in July 2023

The Teacher Trainees’ leadership has elucidated that the reduction in allowances aims to supplement trainees’ food expenses and will take effect from the current academic year onwards.

Although this might be perceived as a minor setback, the NEC is unwavering in its commitment to advocating for trainees’ welfare and striving for optimal outcomes in their favour.

The Association acknowledges the significance of financial assistance during trainees’ education, and the decision to reduce the allowance amount has been carefully evaluated in the context of enhancing overall support and services provided to them.

The NEC expresses gratitude to all Teacher Trainees for their resilience and determination, assuring them that they will persistently endeavour to secure the most favourable outcomes for the benefit of all trainees nationwide.
