GNAT suspends 2 high ranking officers over betrayal, demonstration of bad faith

EducationGhana, July 15, GNAT: The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has suspended two of its high ranking officers over misconduct.

The GNAT in a letter dated July 14, 2021, and signed by its General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah to the two officers, indicated, that they were suspended from the Association effective, Wednesday, July 14, 2021, due to their involvement in matters affecting the GNAT Provident Fund.

The decision to suspend the two officers was taken at an Emergency National Executive Meeting held via the Zoom Application on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, in accordance with Article 6(1) of the Constitution and Rules of GNAT as amended in 2018.

The Two Officers

The two suspended officers include Mr Michael Nsiah- Agyapong, who was the Brong Ahafo Regional GNAT Chairman who was the Board Chairman of the GNAT Provident Fund (a.k.a Teachers Provident Fund).

The Second suspended officer is Mrs Esther Quaye -Sowah, who is a representative of the Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) on the GNAT National Executive Committee, who was a Member Trustee of the GNAT Provident Fund (a.k.a Teachers Provident Fund).

Reasons for Suspension

According to the GNAT, the two were suspended over their conduct, actions and behaviours in connection with issues concerning the GNAT Provident Fund ((a.k.a Teachers Provident Fund). specifically;

  1. Their refusal to appear before a Committee of Inquiry set up by the Association in relation to the change of name of the GNAT Provident Fund (a.k.a Teachers Provident Fund).
  2. Deceiving National Executive on the change of Logo of the GNAT Provident Fund a5 a National Executive Meeting held on 6th March 2021 at GNAT headquarters.
  3. Their unwillingness to cooperate for the smooth transition of the old Board to the New Board of the GNAT Provident Fund (a.k.a Teachers Provident Fund).
  4. Writing a letter to introduce the interim Boardmemnbers on 22nd June 2021 and turning round to host an Annual General Meeting (AGM) of GNAT Provident Fund (a.k.a Teachers Provident Fund)on 23rd June, 2021despite the pendency of an application for an interlocutory injunction on the AGM which was brought to their notice earlier.

Background

The Ghana NationalAssociation of Teachers (GNAT) earlier called for an immediate dissolution of the GNAT Provident Fund Board with a call for an interim board to take over affairs until a new Board is being reconstituted.

The GNAT in its decision on its Tier 3 Fund in a memo to its members indicated that any meeting organised by its National Council is illegal, null and void and of no effect.

 

Reversal of Fund Name

The GNAT Secretariate called for an immediate reversal of the Teachers Provident Fund (TPF) to its original name, GNAT Provident Fund (GPF).
