The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has mourned the Headteacher of Salvation Army Basic School, George Somuah Bosompem.
The Headteacher, 55, was attacked for protesting against the invasion of his garden by drug addicts who smoke and defecate in the school.
” Fellow teachers, we have learnt with complete repugnance the bizarre occurrence of yet another case of unwarranted gang brutalities unleashed on one of our ilk, Mr George Somuah Bosompem, a teacher at the Salvation Army Junior High School at Asiakwa in the East Akim Municipal of the Eastern Region which brutalities resulted in his unexpected and irreplaceable demise.” She said.
Philippa Larsen said that reports of events and circumstances that led to the unfortunate death of the headteacher and colleague are unacceptable, condemnable, primitive, brutish and backward.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers has taken critical notice with disquiet the incessant incidences of attacks on their members in their line of duty by hoodlums and social misfits at the least or no provocations at all.
According to her, the incidences of these unwarranted gang brutalities are too many to recount.
”The end results of these attacks have almost always been death of the victims, some become permanently incapacitated while the lucky ones are left with deformity in one part of their body or the other.” She noted.
”It is disheartening to learn that Mr George Somuah Bosompem met his untimely death in the hands of six delinquent teenagers some of whom passed through his tutelage.” She lamented.
”For how long can we continue to idle by as our teachers continually become the easy targets of these unscrupulous elements in the society without cause?For how long can we allow our teachers to become objects of ridicule while society looks on unrepentantly silent?For how long can we allow scornful and derogatory comments to be passed on our teachers to downgrade their human dignity, integrity and human rights?” She asked.
”Fellow teachers, the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers is ready and willing at all times to activate all the laws and conventions in the books to protect and safeguard the welfare and interest of our teachers at whatever cost.” She emphasized.
”I would want to give you my fullest assurance that we are going to religiously and keenly follow the course of justice in gruesome beatings and subsequent death of Mr George Somuah Bosompem.” She assured.
”We shall ensure that justice is not only done in this case, but we shall ensure that justice is manifestly seen to be done.” She said.
She also appealed to all teachers to stand firm and resolute even as they seek the path of justice for their fallen colleague.
She further appealed to teachers that even as they mourn the catastrophic demise of their colleague,they should remain calm even in the face of extreme provocations.
”Let us not do anything untoward that will lead any of us into conflict with the laws of the land. Let us encourage ourselves that the wheels of justice will surely go the full throttle at the end of which the perpetrators of this horrendous and barbaric act will justifiably be brought to book.” She said.
She called on all teachers in the Asiakwa township to stay away from the classrooms until the necessary conditions are met to protect them.
