Ghanaian Languages to be Compulsory Subjects from Primary to SHS 1 – NaCCA

Ghanaian Languages taught in Public Basic Schools are expected to be extended to the Senior High School Level, most specifically SHS 1.

Dr Prince Armah, the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) made this revelation during a Stakeholders’ Engagement on the New Common Core Programme (CCP) Curriculum for JHS 1 to SHS 1(Basic 7 to 10).

The stakeholders’ engagement, took place at the Bediako Hall of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT)  in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2020.

Dr. Prince Armah, who was responding to questions relating to the relevance of the teaching and learning of Ghanaian languages in the Basic Schools as well as Senior High Schools, noted, that the Ghanaian Languages were of much importance to the Curriculum framers, a reason for the introduction of Ghanaian Languages as a core subject to be treated at the SHS 1.

Dr.. Prince Armah also stated that what the CCP Curriculum has done was to strengthen the Ghanan Languages.

He emphasised, that taking the Primary Schools into consideration, learners shall for the first time in the country’s educational history, study Ghanaian Languages from Primary to SHS 1as a Compulsory Subject.

Adition of Other Ghanaian Languages

Dr. Prince Armah noted that there was the decision by NaCCA to explore other Ghanaian Languages which were not considered in the CCP Curriculum.

He assured the stakeholders, that once the proposals are being brought to their notice, they shall give it a practical consideration.

Subjects

The Common Core Programme (CCP) is a 4-yr programme comprising 9 subjects areas:
Mathematics, Languages (English, Arabic, French, Ghanaian language) , Science (comprising both Natural and Applied Sciences), RME , Physical and Health Education, Career Technology, Social Studies, Computing and Creative Arts and Design.

Dr Armah said the CCP Curriculum is scheduled to take off in September 2020, that’s the beginning of the 2020/21 Academic Year.

He was optimistic, teachers at the JHS 1  to SHS 1 shall be trained on the Common Core Programme before its implementation in September 2020.

Assessment

According to the NaCCA Boss, there shall be a National Assessment for JHS 2 Learners to generate data for improvement at all levels of management and implementation.

The Assessment is known as the National Standard Assessment Test  (NSAT) which according to  NaCCA, is an Assessment tool and not necessarily an Examination.

SHS  Placement

Dr. Prince Armah said Placement exams into SHS will be conducted at the end of JHS 3; however, the mode and format is likely to change to reflect the CCP demands.

Before SHS 2, students would be required to take a Common Core Exams to guide them in choosing a combination of courses for High School Diploma Programmes (HSDP) or Career-related programmes (CRP) in SHS.

That is, From SHS 2 -3, students decide either to pursue career-related programme or an academic-related one or both.

Project works, community services and engagements will be integrated as part of a comprehensive learner assessment that emphasizes Doing.
