The Role of Home Economics in Education

Home Economics is an important subject within the Ghanaian education system, providing students with valuable knowledge and skills related to home management, family nutrition, textiles, and economics. By celebrating World Home Economics Day, the GES aims to encourage teachers and students to remain engaged with contemporary global issues and to improve the standards of teaching Home Economics.

The event will also help to improve the quality of Home Economics education by introducing new methodologies that are in line with current trends and global practices, ensuring that the subject remains relevant and impactful.

Encouraging Nationwide Participation

The Ghana Home Economics Association (GHEA) will take the lead in coordinating activities for this year’s World Home Economics Day celebration. Through the GHEA, basic and secondary schools will have access to resources that can help raise awareness about the importance of sustainable consumption in our daily lives.

As part of the celebration, schools will engage in various activities, including discussions, presentations, exhibitions, and demonstrations related to the theme. This will not only help students understand the significance of responsible consumption but also promote Home Economics as an important subject for national development.

Call to Action for Regional Directors of Education

The GES has called on all Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to inform Heads of Schools offering Home Economics to ensure that they prepare for the celebration. The Regional Directors of Education will also play a key role in supporting and facilitating the event in their regions.

The management of GES aims to foster collaboration and active participation from all stakeholders in the educational sector, particularly in the fields of curriculum development and sustainability education.

The celebration of World Home Economics Day 2025 presents an exciting opportunity to spotlight sustainable consumption practices and to integrate these principles into Ghana’s educational framework. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of Home Economics education in preparing students for responsible, sustainable living in an ever-changing world.
