Teacher Unions in the Pre-Tertiary Education has asked the committee in charge of the reopening of schools to exclude lower primary learners from the reopening of schools.
The Unions is their suggestions to the committee being set up by Minister for Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, suggested the reopening of schools should be in batches.
Reports gathered by EducationGhana indicated that the Unions were invited by the committee to give their input on the possible reopening of schools amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Unions suggested that Basic 4 to JHS 2 Students should be allowed to resume to check the situation before allowing the younger ones to follow.
Inauguration of Committee
Minister of Education Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Wednesday inaugurated a 10-member committee to outline safety precautions for the reopening of schools in the pre-tertiary subsector.
Chaired by former Education Minister, Professor Dominic Fobih, members of the committee were made up of representatives from the Ghana Education Service, UNICEF, private school sector, parents, and the Ministry of Education.

In a statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Minister, Rodney Nkrumah-Boateng, the initiative is said to be in line with a directive from President Akufo-Addo.
Exclusion of Teacher Unions from Committee
Educational Workers Connect, an educational Thinktank has questioned the exclusion of Teacher Unions and Health Experts from a 10- member committee inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to deliberate and find modalities towards the reopening of schools at the pre-tertiary level.
The educational Thinktank made this revelation in a statemen5 copied to EducationGhana.
”As, a Think Tank, we are of the firm conviction that, issues concerning education in general and in this specific case, the reopening of the schools cannot be done without the invaluable inputs by our hardworking teachers represented by their teacher unions. We, therefore, consider theSC composition of this committee incomplete and inappropriate.”

”We are also at a loss why this committee is without a representative from the health sector, notably the GMA knowing too well that, we are intending to reopen the schools still in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic.”
