Ghana’s first group of youth under the Work Abroad Program to South Korea, creating global job opportunities in the shipping sector.

In a major milestone for Ghana’s youth employment strategy, Hon. Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has officially dispatched the first batch of beneficiaries under the Work Abroad Program to South Korea. The departure marks the beginning of international career journeys for several young Ghanaians, recruited to take up roles within Korea’s vibrant shipping industry.

Though the groundwork for the initiative was laid before Dr. Pelpuo assumed office, he has been instrumental in finalising critical processes, including issuing travel licenses, job placement approvals, and government endorsements to ensure a seamless deployment.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Dr. Pelpuo encouraged the recruits to maximise the opportunity for personal growth and national impact. “Your journey is not just about jobs—it’s about building careers, earning sustainable incomes, and investing in your futures. We hope to see you return not only as skilled workers but as entrepreneurs and community leaders,” he said.

The Minister also reaffirmed the Government of Ghana’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of all Ghanaian workers abroad, highlighting ongoing partnerships with foreign employers and embassies to monitor and support their well-being.

The group of excited beneficiaries—some of whom are traveling outside Ghana for the first time—expressed gratitude to the Ministry and the government for opening international employment doors that once seemed out of reach. Many spoke of dreams to fund education, invest in real estate, or launch small businesses with the savings they intend to make.

This deployment is part of a broader employment vision championed by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, whose leadership agenda prioritizes youth empowerment, job creation, and strategic international labour partnerships. The Work Abroad Program is expected to scale further in the coming months, targeting additional sectors and countries, including Germany, Japan, and the Gulf states.

As Ghana takes bolder steps to position its youth in the global workforce, initiatives like this prove that international collaboration can deliver local impact, one opportunity at a time.
