“Colleges of Education reopening postponed to prevent a CETAG strike over delays in salary migration. PRINCOF recommends the move to ensure academic stability. Read more!”

The reopening of Colleges of Education has been postponed, and according to renowned education blogger Ellis Ferdinand, the decision was taken to prevent a possible strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG). The looming strike relates to delays in migrating CETAG members onto the tertiary salary scale.

Ferdinand explained that the postponement aligns with efforts by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to complete the migration process, which is nearing completion. He noted that PRINCOF, the association of Principals of Colleges of Education, recommended the delay to avoid disruptions that could jeopardize the academic calendar.

PRINCOF believes that ensuring the salary migration is finalized before January 2024 will create a conducive environment for students to begin the new academic year without interruptions.

What’s Next for Colleges of Education?
With GTEC providing assurances about the migration, all stakeholders are optimistic that CETAG’s concerns will be addressed promptly. PRINCOF’s proactive stance aims to maintain industrial harmony and ensure that the academic calendar remains intact.

Background

The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has officially announced the postponement of the reopening date for Level 100, 200, and 300 students in government Colleges of Education across Ghana for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Initially set for Monday, November 18, 2024, the reopening has now been rescheduled to Monday, January 13, 2025.

In a letter, PRINCOF cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason behind this decision. Although specific details regarding these circumstances were not disclosed, the association assured stakeholders that a revised academic calendar will be communicated soon to outline the updated schedule.

This change affects thousands of teacher trainees and educators, creating an adjustment period for academic and administrative preparations. The revised schedule aims to ensure that all colleges are adequately prepared for the new academic term.
