Chamber of mines constructs multipurpose three-storey block for UMaT

The Ghana Chamber of Mines, through its Tertiary Education Fund, TEF is constructing an ultra-modern multipurpose three-storey block for the Faculty of Mining and Minerals Technology for the University of Mines and Technology, UMaT at Tarkwa in the Western Region.

The facility will support the increased demand for infrastructure in the school.

The 1.2 million-dollar facility will be funded by the Ghana Chamber of Mines through its Tertiary Education Fund, TEF.

The facility when complete will have eleven lecture rooms that can take up to 180 students. There will be also 25 offices to serve the Faculty of Mining and Mineral Technology.

This is in line with the Chamber’s quest to support improved teaching and learning.

UMaT, which is primarily responsible for training professionals for mining and other industries in the country, thus expansion of its infrastructure has become necessary.

The Vice-Chancellor of UMaT, Prof. Richard Kwesi Amankwah described the intervention of the Chamber of Mines as timely, saying, besides helping to clear the infrastructure deficit of the university, it is also offering grants for research and scholarships to students.

The university had earlier held a mini congregation where twenty-four postgraduate students were awarded various degrees.

They comprised twenty-two masters degrees and two doctorate degrees. The Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Amankwah urged the graduates to use their research to impact society by addressing critical challenges.

For his part, the President of the Chamber of Mines, Dr. Eric Asubonteng said mining companies can only have their social license for smooth operation when they have cordial, transparent and mutually beneficial relationships with their host communities.
