Cancel Licensure Exam and employ more Graduate Teachers – NAGRAT urges Gov’t

TEACHERS UNIONS WORKERS LAPTOP Reposition NAGRAT in teacher unionism - Regional Secretary advises leadership
The President of NAGRAT, Mr Angel Carbonu

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called on the government to quickly abolish the teacher licensure exam after over 27,000 graduate teachers who sat for the May 2021 teacher licensure examination failed.

Mr Angel Carbonu, the President of NAGRAT speaking on behalf of the teacher union in an interview said the GTLE is a government tactic to reduce the intake of teachers in the public service.

“We the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) agree that a teacher should be licensed to teach but we disagree that a teacher should write a licensure examination before he or she is licensed,” NAGRAT’s Carbonu stated.

The Minority in Parliament in line with the Association of Teachers similarly has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to suspend the conduct of the teacher licensure examination and review the curriculum for teacher education.

“GES should suspend the conduct of GTLE and review the curriculum for teacher education and make the licensure an integral part of the course programme as credit hours to be earned by students towards their certification,” It advised.

According to the Minority, the automatic recruitment of teachers on completion of course of study should be re-instated so that the teachers do not stay at home unemployed and become an economic burden on their parents.

Meanwhile, the National Teaching Council (NTC) responsible for the administration of the licensure exams has said it will September this year conduct another examination for graduate teachers who could not pass the May edition.
