Ferdinand | EducationGhana |August 13|Akuffo Addo keeps hope alive for a possible rename of UG to JB Danquah University
The discourse surrounding the potential renaming of Ghana’s esteemed institution, the University of Ghana, has once again set off a spectrum of opinions.
This renewed discussion emerged following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s subtle hint that a renaming might be on the horizon.
The occasion for this contemplative proposal was the 75th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the University of Ghana, where President Akufo-Addo shared his intriguing suggestion.
President Akufo-Addo mused about the possibility of renaming the prestigious university in honour of Joseph Boakye (J.B.) Danquah, highlighting Danquah’s unwavering commitment and pivotal role in rallying the Ghanaian populace to establish the institution.
The President paid tribute to Danquah’s substantial efforts and proactive advocacy, suggesting that renaming the university after him would be fitting.
He maintained that in a society that values historical accuracy and the safeguarding of records, such a gesture would be well-received.
“It is entirely fitting and not implausible to recognize Joseph Boakye Dankwa as the university’s founder.
This undeniable fact, especially as we mark its 75th anniversary, should be commemorated by all of us who have benefited from his work,” President Akufo-Addo remarked. He further noted, “In more politically temperate regions with a stronger attachment to historical authenticity, naming the university after him would be a natural step. Who’s to say that someday, it might become a reality?”
This ongoing conversation regarding the university’s renaming traces back to 2021 when President Akufo-Addo first proposed renaming the University for Development Studies (UDS) and other institutions in honour of the late President Jerry John Rawlings, aiming to celebrate his legacy.
However, this decision received criticism from many quarters, with detractors alleging that it might be a precursor to renaming the country’s premier university after the president’s relative.
As discussions evolve, the fate of the University of Ghana’s name remains uncertain, fueling debate and reflection on the intersection of history, identity, and institutional nomenclature.
