EducationGhana| February 04| Teacher Training Institutions in Ghana: The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Oswei Aduttwum and the National Teaching Council (NTC) which is the agency responsible for teacher education want the introduction of a selection test at the point of admission to help admit applicants who are really fit to be trained as teachers.

To stave off failures in literacy and numeracy tests after graduation, applicants should pass these tests before admission and as a giveaway, NTC will take out the numeracy and literacy from GTLE.

This includes the Subject-Based Test and Computer-Based Test (CBT). The CBT is to help stimulate candidates’ interactions with the computer, apart from helping reduce cheating to the barest minimum.

Besides the selection test, NTC intends to introduce proficiency tests in the form of subject and level-based tests. This test will help obviate some alignment issues between the GTLE and the teacher education curricula.
This was part of new reforms expected to be implemented by the National TYeaching Council by the end of 2022 as part of its mandate and was revealed during the February 2022 stakeholders engagement.

Chairman of the Council, Anis Haffar, says improving the training of teachers with a focus on ICT proficiency is critical in today’s education.
The meeting attracted vice-chancellors, representatives from teacher training institutions and the Ministry of Education.
