About Komenda College of Education 

THE KOMENDA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION was established on the premises of the barracks left by the Fleet Airforce of the British Navy after the Second World War. The barracks were set on Assai Hill, on the outskirts of Komenda town.

Through the efforts of Mr. A. B. Sam, the then regent of Komenda, the legacy was leased to the Methodist Church Ghana in 1947 to be used as a Methodist Teacher Training College. The Government of Ghana later renovated the buildings to make the old barracks suitable for academic work.

On 11th March, 1948, the first batch of students of forty men were enrolled to start an initial 2-Year Teachers’ Certificate “B” Programme. In 1952, the College became a Co-Educational Institution with its first batch of thirty women.

It was established as Komenda Training College but has presently become Komenda College of Education per the Government’s Policy to upgrade Teacher Training Colleges into Colleges of Education. The first Principal of the College was Mr. Lawrence Alfred Creedy, a British national. The motto of the College is “Bep4wso Kurow Hyer1n”, meaning a city set on a hill, shines forth. M.H.B. 577 is the College hymn.

3-Year Diploma in Basic Education | 2-Year Sandwich Diploma Currently the College offers 4 – year Bachelor of Education programs in Early Childhood, Primary Education, and JHS- Agricultural Science, Mathematics/ Science, Mathematics/ ICT, Home Economics, Technical and Visual Arts.

The College is noted for its discipline, academic excellence, and holistic training. Graduates of the College “shine” everywhere they go. In light of this, we aim to always improve the quality of teaching and learning so as to keep high standards.

DEPARTMENT OF TVET

The Technical Vocational Education and Training Department (TVET) is one of the six (6) Departments in the Komenda College of Education responsible for skills Training and Education of the Student-teachers admitted into the College.

VISION:To provide relevant and quality Education and Training skills to enable TVET Basic School teachers to perform in the teaching of the following units: Home Economics Technical skills Visual Art. Agriculture

MISSION: To promote skills development through the education and training of qualified Agriculture/vocational/Technical skills teachers for the country.

The entry requirements for admission to the new 4 -Year B.Ed. degree is as follows:

WASSCE Holders: CREDIT (A1-C6) in Six (6) subjects comprising Three (3) Core subjects, including English Language and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

SSSCE Holders: CREDIT (A-D) in Six (6) subjects comprising Three (3) Core subjects, including English Language and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

Holders of TVET Qualifications: CREDIT in Three Core subjects including English Language and Mathematics and PASSES in Three Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

Candidates awaiting the MAY/JUNE WASSCE and NAPTEX RESULTS can also apply.

Exit Requirements:
Student teachers are expected to accumulate a minimum of 165 credits. The student teacher must:
a. fully meet the National Teachers’ Standards (NTS)
b. achieve a minimum CGPA of 1.5 in all courses
c. successful completion of 168 days school experience (supported teaching in schools)

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Department of Social Science is one of the six departments in the Komenda College of Education. It’s headed by Mr. Theophilus Kweku Bassaw.

The department meets twice every semester aside emergency meetings, thus the first week of the semester and the last week of the semester.

The first week of the semester is used to discuss and take decisions relating to effective teaching and learning in the department in other to maintain high level of teaching competencies and professional discipline and also to ensure maximum cooperation among tutors and students in the department.

It is also used to discuss pertinent decisions on the general well-being of the staff members. Administrative and professional matters within the department are also discussed. The last meeting which normally is held at the end of the semester is used to reflect on the activities done within the semester.

VISION
To position the department to complement the effort of the College in training qualified teachers for our basic schools.

MISSION
To help the College in training competent, dedicated, and selfless professional teachers using available resources to align and complement the general mission of the College.

ACHIEVEMENTS
The department was able to score 99.9% in the end-of-semester exams for the first years. The result of Foundations of Social Studies and TVET was fantastic.

For Ghanaian Identity and Culture exams for the second year, the department scored 100% for the Upper Primary and 99.9 % for the Early Grade students.

It is our prayer that we will be able to have a clean sheet of record in our subsequent end-of-semester exams.

Two Tutors who were enrolled to do a one -year top-up of Master of Philosophy in Social Studies have also completed and graduated successfully.

As a vital part of the history and traditions of Komenda College of Education, the department embraces the college’s mission and commitment; “devoted to technological and general training, to produce competent professional teachers for basic schools to meet the educational needs of the nation. In this regard, we provide excellent opportunities for equipping student teachers with ethical, problem-solving and leadership skills.”

Department of Education provides nationally accredited program courses that emphasize critical thinking/problem solving, innovation/creativity, communication, and teamwork. We assist students in acquiring global competency by teaching them to teach in their several fields of specialization.

Department of Education have five (5) operational divisions which are Early Grade, Upper Primary, Junior High School (JHS), Supported Teaching in Schools (STS), Project Work (Research), and two (2) serviceable divisions, Special Education (Sign Language), and Guidance and Counselling.

About the Department:

The Department comprises the English Language Unit organizes teaching and learning and all other activities related to teaching and learning of the English Language in the college.

The Ghanaian Language Unit organizes teaching and learning of the two main dialects of the Akan Language; Fanti and Twi. At the moment the unit has enough personnel to carry out its duties.

The Department provides excellent opportunities for equipping preservice teachers with functional and professional skills for both oral and written communication.

VISION: We are poised to be the best in providing excellent teaching professionals who will become role models in the country.

MISSION: The Department aimed at producing competent, skillful, and problem-solving Language Educators in both liberal and technical education to meet local and international standards. The products will be leaders in championing English Education in basic schools in Ghana.
