Two students; one from the Opoku Ware School and the other from the St. Louis Senior High School who were crowned best athletes in the just ended 2019 Beta Malt Inter Schools and College Athletics Competition Super Zonals are set to benefit from a fully-funded tertiary educational scholarship worth GHc30, 000.
The beneficiaries; Abotsi Gawuga Daniel of OWASS and Patience Boahemaa of St. Louis SHS have adjudged the best athletes in the contest. Abotsi Gawuga Daniel came first in the 1,500 meters, medley and the 4 by 400 meters.
He, however, came second in the 5000 and 800 meters.
Patience Boahemaa, on the other hand, came first in the triple jump and second in the long jump and also set a 35.80 meters record in Discus.
The four-year tertiary education scholarship is being funded by the Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) manufacturers of Beta Malt.
The company was the headline sponsor of the contest after it signed a three-year partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to sponsor the annual event which is subject to extension.
The company will also put up a project for the winning school after it identifies the needs of those schools.
Beta Malt Brands Manager, Mrs. Portia Offei Asare said athletics was chosen because of the link the brand has with that category of sports.
She said the company was devoting a lot of financial commitment into the partnership and will do more in the future.
According to her, the partnership will be extended other regions across the country where the company will support the athletes from the participating schools from inter-houses, inter-colleges; super zonals to the national sports festival.
“Is a long-term agreement, for the start we have done a three-year partnership and we will go beyond three years and it is renewable. It is a total package for them. So the overall best female athlete and male athlete will get a tertiary scholarship worth Ghc30, 000”, she added
The company is also procuring jerseys, medals and other items for athletes of schools that will participate in the national sports festival.
The company’s products were distributed to the athletes who participated in the contest.
Director of Physical Education Unit at GES, Emmanuel Domenyah commended Beta Malt for the partnership and called on other corporate organisations to support the GES to help improve college sports.
Prempeh College emerged winners in the boys division in the contest to beat T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School (SHS) who has managed to win the competition for a record tenth consecutive time.
Prempeh College secured 99 points placing T.I. AMASS, the defending champions in the third position with 72 points and Opoku Ware School in the second position with 91 points.
