95% of qualified students have secured placements into SHS – Kofi Asare

EducationGhana| April 05| 95% of qualified students have secured placements into SHS:
The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has hinted that about 95% of qualified students have secured placements into SHS.
Mr Kofi Arare made this revelation on his Facebook page on April 5, 2022.
”From where I sit, there are currently about 70 remaining small schools on the CSSPS self-placement portal, suggesting about 95% of qualified students have secured placements, which is great.” He said.
”It is desirable that all the placed students secure and honour their admissions. Last year, 10% of the total placed did not show up.” He argued.

According to him, Most of the remaining schools are TVET and STEM schools located in deprived areas; the majority being day schools no one wants to attend because of the cost of private hostels.
Regional Breakdown
”There is currently no school in the Central, Western North, Eastern and Greater Accra Region.” He said.
”This means a deprived student from Western North may have to settle for Yeboah Asiamah SHS in Bono East which is a day school, only to spend GH 3,000 on private hostel accommodation and feeding,”

”when the free SHS fees paid by gov’t is about GHC 1,500. These are issues we have been raising every year.” Hew said.

”We must ensure the poorest for whom free SHS is primarily meant for are not exposed to higher cost burden by reason of their poor BECE performance, leading to self-placement in distant deprived schools without boarding facilities.” He said.
