SRC wanted to be paid before joining Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee – Chairperson

The reason for which there is not a student representative in the University of Ghana Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee is because they want to be paid, Chairperson of the Committee has alleged.

Per the University’s Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy, which was published in 2010 and updated in 2017, there is supposed to be a Representative of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) in the Committee.

However, the SRC has not been consistent with providing a representative to be a part of the Committee over the years.

Explaining the absence of a student representative, Chairperson of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee, Dr. Margaret Ivy Amoakohene, claimed that the SRC was not willing to join the Committee.

She says that the SRC asked how much it was going to be paid for joining the Committee.

Doubts have been cast on the University’s commitment to addressing issues of sexual harassment and misconduct, especially by lecturers against students.

These have come up after two lecturers of the University were implicated in a “sex for grades” investigations carried out by BBC Africa Eye.

The two are Prof. Ransford Gyampo, a Political Science lecturer and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor of the Department of Teacher Education of the School of Education and Leadership, University of Ghana.

Following the expose, Management of the University has interdicted them.

They would hauled before the University’s Anti Sexual Harassment Committee to assist with internal investigations.
