The rankings reflect academic excellence, competitive strength, and consistency in science and mathematics education, providing valuable insight into which schools are shaping Ghana’s future STEM leaders.

Understanding the 2024 Rankings

The rankings are based on data collected from 229 senior high schools across Ghana’s 16 regions. The methodology considers:

✔ A school’s final position in the NSMQ at the national level.
✔ The category of the school, as classified by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
✔ A school’s cumulative performance over the past 12 years.

This year, any school that qualified for the national competition was automatically included in the ranking, ensuring fairness and inclusivity.

Mfantsipim School delivered an outstanding performance, strategically dominating their opponents in the riddle segment to secure victory. Their journey saw them defeat powerhouses like Prempeh College and Presec-Legon, marking a significant moment in NSMQ history.

2. St. Augustine’s College Breaks into the Top 10

For the first time in NSMQ ranking history, St. Augustine’s College secured a top 10 position nationally, ranking 8th overall and 3rd in the Central Region.

3. Central Region Emerges as the Strongest Contender

The Central Region was the best-performing region, boasting:
✔ Six schools in the quarter-finals
✔ Four schools in the semi-finals
✔ Two schools in the grand finals (Mfantsipim & St. Augustine’s)

Apam SHS made the biggest leap, moving 19 places from 71st in 2023 to 52nd in 2024. Other notable climbers include:

Ranking Methodology: How the Schools Were Scored

Competition Points System

✔ Schools earn points based on the final stage they reach in the NSMQ.
✔ Points are independent of actual contest scores to ensure fairness.
✔ Schools that do not qualify for the national competition receive zero points.

Category Points Adjustment

✔ Non-Category A schools get bonus points for advancing beyond the One-Eighth stage.
✔ Category B, C, and F schools must reach at least the Quarter-Finals to receive extra points.

Tiebreaker Rules

✔ Schools with equal points are ranked by the number of NSMQ championships won.
✔ If neither has won, they are jointly ranked.
