Key Changes in Subject Offerings
- Mandatory Subjects: The mandatory subjects for the 2024 BECE include English Language, Mathematics, General Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education (RME), Career Technology, and Creative Arts & Design.
- Elective Subject: The Ghanaian Language has been designated as an elective subject for candidates. Students are expected to register for the Ghanaian Language they have studied at school.
- Optional Subjects: The optional subjects now include French, Arabic, and Computing. Candidates have the flexibility to choose one of these optional subjects based on their interests and academic strengths.
Reasoning Behind the Changes
Initially, Ghanaian Language was slated to be an optional subject for the 2024 BECE. However, the decision was revised following a statement from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), expressing disagreement with the proposal.
Consequently, Ghanaian Language was made an elective subject, and Computing was introduced as an optional subject in its place.
Official Statement
The directive from the Ghana Education Service was signed by the Acting Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, Mr. Prince Agyemeng-Duah.
The decision reflects a collaborative effort between education stakeholders to ensure alignment with curriculum objectives and student needs.
Implications for Candidates
With Ghanaian Language now designated as an elective subject, candidates have the opportunity to choose their preferred language of study for the examination.
Additionally, the inclusion of Computing as an optional subject provides students with an avenue to explore technology-related fields alongside their core subjects.
Conclusion
The adjustments to the subject offerings for the 2024 BECE represent a strategic response to feedback from education authorities and stakeholders.
By making Ghanaian Language elective and introducing Computing as an optional subject, the Ghana Education Service aims to provide candidates with a more diverse and relevant examination experience.
Students are encouraged to make informed choices regarding their subject selections and prepare diligently for the upcoming examination.
