2019 Greater Accra Schools’ Sports:WASS, St. John’s Grammar win big at GASSA Zone 5 games

The Inter-Schools Athletics competition of The Greater Accra Schools Sports Association zone 5 ended yesterday at the West African Secondary School Park at Adenta.

The two day event saw ten schools compete for laurels in both track and field events.

At the end of term competition, West Africa Senior High School dominated the Boys category, while to St. John’s Grammar accumulated the most medals in the Girls category to rank above the other competing schools.

Faith community Baptist SHS (FACOSH) produced an extraordinary performance to finish second to WASS; a performance that did not follow the script especially digging through the archives of Greater-Accra High school sports.

Joshua Nyameye became the fastest man in Zone 5; winning gold in the men’s 100m, replicating a similar feat in the 200m where he finished in gold position at a time of 20.24 sec.

Issac Addae of was the most decorated Athletes, sweeping three medals after a series of top drawer performances in the 400m (50.01sec), 800m (1:58.99sec) and 1500m.

“I have worked very hard, I am in my final year and so I knew it may be difficult, but I HD done it before and so I was very confident despite the little rest time between the races,” he told Univers Sports

In the Girls category, one event that caught attention was the 4x100m where the Marbel twins, Daniella and Davina Marbel, made history as the first pair of twins to feature in an event for the same school, winning a medal in the process.

The Twins were a part of Quartet from Achimota Secondary School (Motown) that won gold in the girls 4x100m.

Davina believed that that the twin inspiration spurred them on.

“They say twins can do great things, but we have loved Athletics since we were in primary School and we are proud to achieve this. We want to do athletics even at the university.”

The St. John’s Grammar SHS Girls team also won the women’s 4x200m while Felix Annan from St. John’s Grammar SHS, jumping at a height of 1.80m to beat Asiamah Micheal and Derrick Kerchie from WASS and PRESEC-Legon respectively to win gold in boys High jump.
