“You can visit your child in school but can’t interact with him/her” – NAPO

Education Minister, Mathew Opoku Prempeh

Parents of Senior high school final year students can visit their children within their 6 weeks’ stay in school but a parent will not be allowed to talk to his or her ward, the Minister for Education has said.

The Education Minister disclosed this in an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on PeaceFM’s Kokrokoo monitored by websaet.com on June 4, 2020.

The Minister in the interview said for safety reasons “We do not want any parent to visit his or her children in any of the Senior high schools, he added that the students are to be in school for only six weeks to prepare for their final examination and then come back home after 5 weeks”

He explained that parents barred from visiting students effective June 22, 2020, is part of measures to limit external interactions in schools and also slow the spread of the novel virus.

The Member of Parliament advised parents to provide all the necessary items their children as a student will need throughout the weeks to be spent in school for them to be comfortable and focus on their studies because once they report to school parents will not be allowed to pay a visit.

However, NAPO later stated that “even if a parent is allowed to enter the school premises he/she will not be allowed to interact with the student, adding that if a parent has something precious or special for his/her ward, it should be given to the school authorities for them to deliver to the student appropriately.

Meanwhile, the National Council of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has petitioned the government to authorise final year students reporting to school on June 15 to use of feature phones in order to stay in touch with parents should the need be.
